Campo dei fiore, Piazza Navona, & Sant’Angelo, in Roma

This is our first attempt at blogging, so we hope you will bear with us as we learn the ins and outs of how the whole thing works.  If we have problems, we’ll let you know, and if you have problems, please let us know via email (we know that works!!).  So, here we go…

Welcome to the Susanna e Vincenzo Travel Blog!

As with most travellers, we developed lists of the things we need to bring with us in addition to clothing and personal kit bags.  What’s the biggest challenge?  We absolutely NEED to plan/organize all the electronics we will have with us!!!  Our first pic is, therefore, of what we like to call « The Seniors’ Travel Kit ».

Here’s what’s in the kit:  2 CPAP machines/cords; 2 hearing aids chargers and cords; 2 iPad/iPhone chargers/cords; 2 heating pads; 4 plug adapters and a power bar.  Phew! Hahahahahaha!

Finally, we were ready to go.  We left London on Saturday, February 10 and were whisked to Toronto by Warren Sye, a good neighbour and wonderful chauffeur.  Thanks Warren!

La Prima Giornata a Roma

As with overnight flights, we were pretty beat when we arrived at Fiumicino Airport in Rome.  Thank goodness one of the terrific team members of our tour company, Savour Italy, was there to greet us and take us to our Air B&B in Trastevere.  Once settled (and following a short nap!), we wandered out to have a walk.  Here are a few pics to whet your appetite!

These are from the Campo dei fiore, found in Piazza del Biscione in Rome.  It has this daily farmers market that has fresh flowers, fruits, vegetables and all sorts of food products - pestos, olive oil, truffles - it just goes on and on.  Absolutely marvelous!

We went from there to Piazza Novona, one of my favourite places - lots of terrific ristorante and, of course, the highlight of the Bernini sculpture in the centre.

Then came the walk past Hadrian’s Mausoleum, the construction for which was started in    135 AD.  It was renamed Castello Sant’Angelo when early Popes discovered it could serve as a fortress against invading forces. In fact, there’s an underground tunnel connecting the Castello to the Vatican complex.

Beautiful, isn’t it?  And, it’s humongous!  Take a look at the people along the bridge - that’ll give you some perspective on its overall size.  FYI - it’s 48m high!

Food for today:

-Colezione: cappuccini e cornetti al cioccolato , mmmmmmmm! (In Trastevere -Bar Cinque)

- Pranzo: vino Rosso e uno pizza condiviso (red wine and a shared pizza - tomatoes, capers, artichoke, arugula and mozzarella) in Piazza Navona (Ristorante Tucci)

- Cena:  pasta carbonara for Vince and, for me, pasta with San Marzano cherry tomatoes, basil, green olives and parmesan.  Oh sooooo flavourful!)
