Mama Rosa

 Buongiorno a tutti!

We have been making our way through the first week of scuola - believe it or not, it’s lots of fun.  So today, we decided to treat ourselves to a lunch at our favourite seafood osteria, “Mama Rosa”.

We discovered this lovely little spot last year and had marked it on our list of things that we wanted make sure we did again when back in Salerno.

I didn’t quite get all of the text that’s written above Vince’s head - here’s the whole thing:

« La Passione per la mia cucino e paragonabile solo all’amore per i miei figli »
« The passion for my cooking is comparable only to the love for my children »

And the fun thing about this is the other writing below within the two large black panels.  Any person speaking a language other than Italian has been invited to write a translation of Mama’s quote in their own language.  We saw at least 30 different ones!

All of the staff were very friendly and the service was terrific.

We started with a couple of dishes from the menu’s “Seafood Appetizers”.  One of the house specialties is the fried baby squid (capucchielli).  It is described as “very tender and tasty…”

And it was!  They have to be the best we’ve ever tasted!  Yum!

Our second choice from the Appetizers was “Seafood & Garden Minestrone”.  This was not your average minestrone.  It had the most flavourful broth and included fresh vegetables and tons of mini clams.  It was garnished with garlic croutons.
Very nice!!

For our Prima course, we decided to share the “Paccheri alla Genovese with octopus plus chopped pistachios”.  This was a pasta dish (that’s the paccheri) that had onion and octopus stewed together for 3 hours over a low heat.  The dish is garnished at the end with chopped pistachios.

Oh sooooo good!

Our last choice from the menu was from the Seafood Secondi list:  the Grilled Mixed fish of the Day.

Clockwise from the Top left: Prawns (gamberoni), Cuttlefish (Sepia), Sea bass (spigola) and at the bottom is Sea Bream (I think?!).  The prawns and sea bass were particularly good, but I have to say that the Cuttlefish was not my favourite - it was very chewy.  I hid it under some salad so it looked like I ate it.  Hahahahaha!

We were quite full after finishing all of these lovely dishes, so we gracefully declined dessert.  Our host insisted, however, that we try some of the house made digestifs.

While they did have limoncello, we decided to try something different.  On the left is Mandarin seasoned with Turmeric, and on the right is Strawberry with basil!  Were they ever  good!  Very refreshing!

So there you have it!  Lunch out and a nap after!

Ciao for now!
